The concept of punching a time clock has been around since the industrial revolution of the early 1900's. However, it was not until the invention of the electronic cash register in the early 1980's that employees could clock in/out on the cash register. This eliminated the need for a punch card and greatly increased accuracy and reduced manpower needs in calculating time worked for payroll purposes.

While the need for employees to clock in and out on a terminal started off simple the requirements of government have greatly increased the demands placed upon management. There are a host of different labor laws, tip reporting requirements and labor restrictions governing the number of hours to be worked in a day/week and even when minors are allowed to work.

The Need For An Employee Time Clock

What started off simple has quickly become complex. Your needs are far greater than a simple time clock that tracks the clock in and out times for your employees. You need help with the government regulations regarding different aspects of your labor pool.

Tip reporting and handling have become a huge issue in the restaurant business. You need help tracking tipped employees and what they declare as tips earned.

Tracking employee breaks has become a bigger and bigger hassle. Some states govern the length of breaks and whether they are paid or not. I know of one state that requires a minimum of a 20 minute unpaid break per employee. If that employee clocks back in 1 minute early, their entire break is paid. Who has time to monitor every employee's break?

And we have just now gotten to the problem of employees clocking in early, riding the clock or simply having a friend clock them in when they aren't even there!

Tipped employees are required to declare their tips earned when they clock out for the day. These declared amounts are then reported with their time worked.

What good would all this data do if we didn't report on it? Most software products are able to track and report on all time clock data and use weekly, bi-weekly, bi-monthly and monthly payroll cycles. Be sure to verify that the product you are looking at will meet all of your requirements before purchase.

Some point of sale products will also export all time clock data to file for import into several different accounting packages.

How to Get Free Wheelchairs through the NHS

It is possible to obtain a wheelchair either funded or part funded by the NHS through what is known as the NHS Wheelchair Service.

NHS Wheelchair Services are run by local health authorities and are responsible for allocating funds to the wheelchair service and primary care trusts that in turn are responsible for providing the service to the public. This can include contracting the running of the service to a private outside company.

The way the services are organised between different local authorities varies. This includes the eligibility criteria which are used to decide what type of wheelchair to provide and also who is entitled to a funded wheelchair. Timescales between referral, assessment and supply of equipment also varies greatly.

The basic process is as follows:

Referral to your local NHS Wheelchair service
An assessment of your needs takes place
Timescales and funding options are discussed
Wheelchair and training if needed are provided
A maintenance plan is arranged

(It must be noted that not everyone is deemed to be entitled to a funded or part funded wheelchair. Depending on your circumstances you may be expected to fund or part fund the cost of a wheelchair yourself)

You will be referred to the service by your doctor, consultant, occupational therapist or you they may run a self-referral system. Contact your local NHS to find out details on how to be seen by the Wheelchair Service and for an assessment to take place. It is not uncommon for a wait of between 3-6 months for an assessment date, this varies between local authorities.

Assessments are usually carried out at a NHS Wheelchair Service centre. If transport to and from the centre is a problem then ask your local social services for help with this. During the assessment which will be carried out by a qualified professional your needs will be discussed including all the situations where the wheelchair will be used.

The funding options will be discussed with you and a decision on whether the NHS will fund the cost of a wheelchair or part of the cost will take place. The time between assessment and supply of the wheelchair varies depending on the type of wheelchair and local resources. A made to measure wheelchair can take some months to make, this can take several months.

When the wheelchair is ready there is a handover either at your local NHS Wheelchair Service centre or your home. During the handover you will be showed how to safely use the wheelchair and information on who is responsible for maintaining and repairing the Wheelchair.

It must be said that often the time between being referred and actually receiving your wheelchair (if you are entitled) can be many months, the wheels of buroceracy grind slowly. A lot of people simply can not wait that long only to be told they are not entitled to any funding and decide to privately purchase a wheelchair so as not to effect there quality of life.

Article marketing mastery sounds more like an unattainable ideal than an actual destination doesn't it?

I don't expect to ever leave my trusty Dell one day, after writing an article and say "Damn. Nailed it. Time to 'master' something else."

It won't happen. And that's the beauty of all of this.

Progress not perfection.

While I was a copywriter at J Walter Thompson and Young & Rubicam in New York, we creatives would get literally drained by the amount of times we would have to present our ideas. Internally and to the all mighty clients who pay all the bills. Present to this person, present to that person. Get on a plane to Atlanta, present. Go to focus groups, present.

One of the tricks that we came up with during all of that tedium was a game where we would try and insert a phrase into meetings with the head clients. Simple phrase...were totally unique but also HAD NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH WHAT WE WERE TRYING TO SELL THEM.

The 'game' part of it was to see who could most creatively insert the phrase!

For instance, before we got into the conference room with the client, the creatives would agree on the phrase, and the more ridiculous the better. So if I was selling ideas to The Bronx Zoo (which I continually did), the phrase might have been something outrageous like having to say "albino criminals" or "why LAWN FURNITURE IS SEXY.' And who ever could do it WITHOUT calling attention to how RIDICULOUS it sounded...won!

Bear with me here, I'm turning the corner.

Well what I didn't know at the time, but do very well know now is that what we were actually accomplishing with this little creative 'phrase game' was that we were inserting unique KEYWORDS into the meeting. We were, in fact, 'cloaking our keywords.'

That's right...KEYWORDS.

Now, here's why you should be playing this not so little game...

By finding VERY SMART ways to insert unique phrases into your articles THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TOPIC OF YOUR ARTICLES, you will be able to track them as they fly around the net.

You'll be able to do natural searches for your own CRAZY keywords and see which webmasters have picked up your content. Because of the uniqueness of your keywords, they will completely be your own. No one else should have ever used these words in combination...that's your tracking key.

Again, it is very important that you DON'T use a crazy keyword (which can be more than one word, don't forget) that will pull your readers off course. It can't be disruptive. So finding clever ways of putting them in there is important to the natural flow.

Try it with one article.

Watch as your work ends up in countries you've never even heard of before.

A United States research, published in Dec 2006?s issue of Pediatrics, suggested that having fast-food restaurants in children?s hospitals may encourage young patients? families to eat fast food and to think that it is relatively healthy.

Parents of children who received outpatient treatment at Children?s Memorial were much more likely to buy McDonald?s food on the day their youngsters were treated than parents of children treated at Chicago-area hospitals without McDonald?s.

Parents of children treated at Children?s Memorial also were twice as likely to rate McDonald?s food as a relatively healthy choice than those whose children were treated elsewhere.

In view of the prevailing concerns about the childhood obesity, this may be a troubling phenomenon. About 17 percent of US children are considered as obese. Heavy consumption of calorie-laden, fatty fast food is quoted as one of the possible causes.

Obesity is a risk factor for health problems such as diabetes, hypertension, stroke, high blood cholesterol, etc., which will ultimately lead to development of heart disease.

Data collected showed that at least 59 of the United States? 250 children?s hospitals have fast-food restaurants. This may give 2 different messages: as health-care profession promoting health and saying obesity is a huge medical problem?, and then implicitly encouraging it.

The researchers surveyed 386 parents and other adults leaving 3 Chicago-area hospitals after their children had outpatient visits. They are Children?s Memorial; Ronald McDonald Children?s Hospital in Maywood, which use McDonald?s branding but has no McDonald?s restaurant; and the University of Chicago?s children hospital, which has no McDonald?s restaurant or branding on site.

The study found that 56 percent of participants at Children?s Memorial had fast food on the survey day, compared with 29 percent at Ronald McDonald Children?s Hospital and 33 percent at the University of Chicago Hospital. Most of those at all 3 hospitals who had fast food that day chose McDonald?s.

Nevertheless, some health professionals do feel that occasional use of fast food to treat sick children going through difficult treatment is not really a big issue. If one chooses wisely, fast food needs not be an unhealthy choice, according to a dietitian.

As what a dietitian suggests, one should keep portion sizes small and limit eating hamburgers to only once a week. A hamburger and orange juice give 350 kcal and 10g of fat, of which 3g is made up of saturated fat.

2 years ago, doctors at Cleveland Clinic, known for heart disease research tried to remove McDonald?s from the hospital. Thought the restaurant is still there, it began offering healthy alternatives to Big Macs and French fries after discussion with clinic officials.

It is more important for doctors and nurses to continue to talk to parents about what constitutes a healthy diet for kids, and to teach the kids to choose healthier options when eating out.

Outdoor Furniture-Teak: Understanding Teak

Tectona grandis is a deciduous (annual) hardwood tree indigenous to the dry, hilly terrains of Southeast Asia and Indonesia. It is extremely dense-grained and highly resistant to decay, warping, shrinkage and swelling. These characteristics make teak patio furniture extremely durable. Teak has a high natural oil content which acts as a natural preservative, allowing furniture made from this wood to be left outdoors for decades.

How durable is teak? Early sailing ships were often made from teak, which were impervious to a maritime environment (salt water, rain, high winds). In fact, the many of the first outdoor teak benches were made of recycled decking from old sailing ships. Public parks in England boast recycled teak benches many of which are nearly centuries old, as England had one of the first modern navy.

Teak wood ages gracefully?kind of like Sofia Loren or Paul Newman. If left to the elements, teak develops a silver grayish coloring which, over time can be left as is or revived to its original patina by lighting sanding and the application of a little teak oil. Many people prefer machine made furniture.

Teak furniture manufacturing in Indonesia is generally placed in one of three categories: handmade, semi-machine made, or fully machine made.

Contrary to popular belief, the words "handmade" and "furniture" do not go well together when it comes to teak outdoor furniture.

Handmade means just that: handmade. An Indonesian ?teak factory? that makes manufacters handmade furniture looks an awful lot like a rural village with "artisians" sitting around in their yards whittling. This may look good in those home-made vacation videos or as neighborhood barbeque conversation, but home made means less than perfect furniture.

Handmade teak furniture may feature "character" or "unique detailing" but no two will look precisely alike. Handmade teak is probably the cheapest that money can buy, since Southeast Asia boasts some of the cheapest labor around.

Semi-machine made furniture is produced using power tools in a factory. Cuts and bores are more precise although pieces are ultimately fitted by hand. A skilled and experienced furniture maker, with the proper training and experience can produce very legitimate semi-machine products with a higher degree of uniformity than handmade.

Of course, semi-machine made furniture is more expensive to produce than handmade furniture but is almost always worth the difference.

Full machine factories exclusively use power equipment, tooling, dies and processes intended to take the guess work out of the manufacturing process. Two exact pieces of teak furniture made from a full machine factory will be indistinguishable from one another and looks more "expensive".

This posture no matter how ergonomic requires some of your body weight to be supported by your shins putting a strain, however small, on your spine. Cafe Pomodoro Spaghetteria/Wine Bar

It wraps around the Las Vegas Hotel on the corner of Avenue Eusebio A Morales and Calle 55 streets and is in the area known as El Cangrejo, Panama City?s business district. The Wine Bar entrance faces Eusebio A Morales and the Cafe Pomodoro Spaghetteria faces Calle 55. On the Wine Bar side music and wine flow from 6 pm to wee hours; earlier they serve a lunch menu from the Pamadoro side. The Wine Bar offers a generous and varied wine menu. Leaving the Wine Bar side you travel through an inter courtyard that connects the Pomadoro and the Wine Bar, there you can dine under a canopy of trees as Panama?s weather is perfect for on a starry night. As you enter the Pomodoro side you enter a cozy caf? atmosphere. There?s an espresso machine behind the bar and sidewalk tables just out the door. Right next door out the sidewalk is Pomodoro?s walk up window for carry out orders.

Our Saturday night meal for two consisted of: Freshly toasted bread with Balsamic dipping sauce, veal sausage, Pomodoro salad, Chicken and Egg soup, and Corvina with Spaghetti. Two Atlas beers (excellent, local favorite) to wash it down, and we were out the door tip included $22.00. Menus were in Spanish and English.

It?s obvious by the details more than one trip was made here and we are partial to this dinning experience.

From the carry out window you can see into the kitchen of the Pomodoro. The counter waitress doubles as the salad chef for the sit down dinning area. From there you can see orders prepped for the seated section. I watched as huge rustic loaves of bread were quartered and sliced, then toasted and served as a prelude to all seated customers. Salads are not prepared ahead and reserved for service at the time they are ordered, but instead each order is made from uncut vegetables especially for you.

A second location has recently opened on the causeway with more of a night life atmosphere.

It?s obvious by the details more than one trip was made here and we are partial to this dinning experience. We find the atmosphere and the service to be delightful and the food has never failed to be generous and delicious.

Manolo

There are several locations around town and is probably as close to a ?chain? restaurant as you are going to find in Panama. It offers typical Panamanian food and we would compare it to a Panamanian ?Friday?s?. The atmosphere is more quiet and sedate than Friday?s with a romantic feel for evening dinning. There?s usually a bar area, and inside and patio dinning. Manolo is open 24 hours a day, with complete menus. The atmosphere is friendly and the service is fast. The food is always fresh, generous portions, and delicious.

For dinner I ordered a mixed salad (ensalada mixta) a large green vegetable salad and a bowl of Panamanian chicken soup. My husband ordered the antipasto and a fried chicken dinner that came with a salad and fried plantains. The chicken was several pieces of boneless chicken breast grill fried. A beer and two cups of caf? con leche. Our bill was $23.00 with tip. Manolo is one of my favorite places to get a cup of caf? con leche (Panamanian coffee). Make a note that for all restaurants in Panama we?ve been to so far additional cups of coffee are additional charges to ?la cuenta? (the bill). Menus were in Spanish and English.

We?ve been here several times and will keep going back. For good quality food and great prices, it?s hard to beat.

A Furniture Refinishing Business In Your Home.

If you have a garage or work building and are willing to learn a craft, upholstering, re-upholstering and/or furniture refinishing would make an excellent home business. The investment is comparatively small and there is always a market for these skills and the products they yield.

If you do not already know how to upholster or refinish wood, the first priority is to learn how. If you are experienced, you can begin with small projects and work your way up to the more complex and better paying jobs.

In the case of a husband and wife, one could specialize in each to provide a complete service! Learning these crafts starts with reading, then practicing. If possible, get a job working in the field to learn direct from the professionals. Otherwise, there are schools, courses and hundreds of books covering every possible aspect of furniture upholstery and refinishing.

During your preparation, you may decide to specialize --modern, antiques or just chairs and sofas for example. When you are ready for customers, have a sign made and place an ad that announces your services (be specific). Put signs on your car or truck too, so people can see them when you pick up or deliver furniture.

When you bring in jobs that are badly in need of repair, take "before" pictures of them -- to compare with "after" pictures when they are finished. Post the best of these in a photo album to show prospective customers and for possible future use in ads or brochures (you may need well contrasting black and white photos for these.) Arrange your album with good examples of each major type of work that you do and include a short (no more than 3 line) title and explanation for each. This way, if you are busy, customers can browse through them while waiting.

These pictures will not only show what fine work you do-- they will also suggest other jobs to the customer. Use a good camera for these pictures (hire a photographer if necessary), so the pictures will accomplish their mission.

Plan your shop according to the work you are going to do in it. You will need more room to refinish tables, stands to do smaller items and a dust free section for the application of wood finishes. Upholstering takes less room, but the area must be safe from mice and moths -- especially your storage areas.

When operating a business like this, you will be asked to recommend finishes, fabrics and methods. As a professional, you are often in a better position to answer these questions than your customers, but be careful not to routinely recommend those things that bring you the most profit. remember that they may also ask someone else! It is OK, however, to point out things that are easier (therefore, cheaper) to work with.

You will find that in the long run, honestly really is the bestpolicy! Pricing in a business like this is very difficult, and you have to give estimates on most of our work. If you see the cost is going well over your estimate, give the customer a call before proceeding.

The rule here is "never surprise a customer with bad news." If the cost is slightly more, and your "estimate" was pretty firm just absorb the cost as the price of a "lesson" in how to estimate. Your pricing of course, will be based on the cost of materials,labor and utilities plus your profit.

Note that labor and profit are two entirely different categories. Labor is the amount you would have to pay someone to do the job; profit is your "override" on the labor plus your profit on the materials (usually 25-40%).

A fully qualified upholster or furniture refinisher should not earn less than $10 (gross) per hour -- and in some areas, $25 per hour may not be out of line for top quality work. When making your estimates, add a little "padding" (perhaps 5%) to cover unforseen costs. Always figure your estimates and prices with good quality materials -- when you use lower quality materials, usually to save money, let it be your customer's decision.

The fastest way to learn if you want to get into the furniture refinishing or upholstery business to redo some of your own. Take a chair or table, set up a practice area and try your skill. Use BIX finish remover (available at most hardware stores) to remove paint ( a second coat will also remove the stain), clean thoroughly, sand and apply the new finish.

The secret is not to get in a hurry! Let the wood dry between operations; take the extra few minutes for a first class sanding job; wait another day for the finish to dry enough for the next cost, and go over the surface with fine steel wool (if recommended) and wipe thoroughly between coats.

In a business, you will have several pieces in different stages of completion, so the temptation to rush will not be so great. Another way to help expedite your "education" is to hire an experienced helper -- for both the assistance and "lessons." In addition to your signs, have a good quality 3 or 4 line rubber stamp made to custom print your own invoices and even business cards.

If funds are scare, get some duplicate ticket books at the local stationery store and stamp your name on each original ticket to get "custom printed" invoices. As long as your business is not too professional, you can place 3 x 5 cards with your name and services on supermarket bulletin boards. Keep an ad in the local paper, but change it a little every so often (like a new special every month), to help stimulate interest. When you are ready for more business, put an ad in the yellow pages.

Whenever business lags, you can always contact rental agencies (both real estate and furniture) to either buy used (but good quality only) furniture that needs repair, or to do their repair work. The profits will be lower, but low profits are better than NO profits.

Also, bear in mind that refinishing and re-upholstering other people's furniture is not your only option. You can also buy things to restore -- from auctions, garage sales, foreclosures (business furniture is a whole new market!) and from individuals who answer your "will buy" ads. The item you buy to refinish must bring at least double its cost PLUS a fair return for your labor and materials to restore it.

For this reason, buy only high quality or antique furniture, so you will "have something" when it is completed. One possible pitfall in the refinishing and upholstery business is unpaid bills. People sometimes really want to have a couch recovered and visualize how nice it would look with a nice, quality (expensive)fabric. Trouble is, while the couch is being covered they spot a new item at half what they owe on the old couch -- and buy it!

This leaves the upholsterer with $100 worth of material cut and sewn onto a $50 couch. The message here is to protect yourself; get enough down to ensure the recovered couch will be worth your investment should the customer "disappear."

How To Remove Spots From Fabric Furniture

First of all, let me explain one thing about spots and stains:

- We call spots some unwanted soiled marks on the fabric that does not belongs to the fabric itself and can be easily removed. Spots are more like: - Grease, shoe polish, finger prints, etc.

- Stains are a little more complicated to be removed and most of the times they can not be removed at all. Few stains that can be removed from the fabric are more like: - Food, coffee, juice, wine, beer, water, ink, urine, etc.

- Stains that can not be removed from fabric are bleach; and hard to remove: blood.

Most of spots and stains can be removed if used with the proper product. One very important thing to remember is to pre-test the material first. Here I will tell you how to remove most of the stains out of fabric, and the same process can be used to remove spots/stains from carpet as well.

This is what you need to do first, before you can actually try to remove any spot or stain from fabric or carpet:

- Take an inconspicuous area and make a test first. If you a trying to remove a spot/stain from carpet, go to a closet or a small area under the bed or behind a dresser and try the product you are going to use to remove the spot/stain. Apply a small amount on the cloth and work on the carpet and observe for a color transfer. If you notice a transfer, stop use the product, try a different, a mild one. The same concept applies for fabric, usually under the furniture you will have a small piece of fabric where you will be able to try for color fastness or transfer. If you noticed that the color is been transferred to the cloth stop the process and try something different. Always pre test any product before use them.

Alright, let?s get started:

-Liquid Stains:

1- First blot the stain with a clean cloth leaving it, if possible, on the stain for a few minutes to absorb the most out of it. Keep changing the cloth for a clean one for as long as you see transfer. 2- Then, spread ?Super-Sorb Liquid Spills Absorbent? over the stain and let it stand for about 15 to 20 minutes. 3- Vacuuming the whole area repeating the process if necessary. 4- If the stain persists, repeat steps 1 to 3 until you see no more stain.

-Grease or shoe polish spots:

1- Using ?Buckeye Gum, Tar & Oil Remover? blot a small portion onto a clean white cloth and start working gently on the spot. 2- Repeat the process for as long as you see transfer. But, remember to not over-wet the spot or you can damage the fabric. 3- If possible, do a little each day until you have all the spot gone, this will avoid over-wetting the spot.

-Ink stains:

1- Using ?RESOLVE Spot Magic Carpet Cleaner?, spray a little mist on top of the stain and blot with a clean white towel. 2- Keep repeating the process until all ink is removed.

Note: Most of ink stains require more than one time service, just remember to avoid over wetting the stain, if necessary do it in more days.

-Pet urine stain:

This is something different from any usual stain; you are dealing with many things in here:

- Bacteria.

- Acid

- Sometimes blood.

- Bad odor.

- Body fluid.

So it requires a more detailed procedure and the use of a hand glove. Some technicians use mask because of the products they deal with, in this scenario, you are not require to use mask as our product won?t do you any harm.

1- First blot the stain with a clean dry white towel to remove as much urine you can. 2- Then, spread ?D-Vour Absorbent Powder? over the stain and let it stand for 15 to 30 minutes. 3- Vacuum the powder off the stain and repeat the process if necessary. 4- Using the ?Shakedown Odor Eliminator? spread it over the stain and in the entire area after the stain has been removed. 5- Vacuuming the entire area in the next day.

Note: This process should remove the stain without any problem, if don?t, repeat steps 2 to 5.

Talk about a difficult endeavor. Opening your first restaurant is not an easy achievement. Normally the process takes a year or more after you decide to go for it. And the planning involved is immense! You have to get a business license, sign a lease agreement for your building, equipment to buy, contracts with food providers, employees to hire, advertising, . . The list goes on and on!

But you continue on. Why? Obviously it is not the documented numbers for success. Some of those numbers say you have a 90% failure rate. But no worries, you?ve got something more to offer. This is your dream, and no analyst, or dumb numbers will take it away from you.

And you know what? You?re right! Any number that is published is still just a number, and numbers do not know passion. And hell, even if those numbers do hold out, you still did something to try to achieve your dream. Most people just think about it, but you?re doing it!

Even so, no matter how much you want your dreams of owning a successful restaurant to come true, they will not unless you work hard for it. Yes, sorry, but it is true. You have to work very hard for it. Really, really hard. I don?t think I can emphasize it enough, you have to work hard (times a googol) to fulfill your dream.

The following are three lessons I believe are the most important to make your new restaurant a success:

Don?t Let Them Come to You ? Go To Them
Some new restaurant owners think that if they open a restaurant, people will magically find out about it and will instantly become regulars. Sorry, but it just doesn't happen like that. You WILL become the most popular restaurant in the area, but only if you work at it. You have to market! Tell everybody you can when you get a chance. Random people in the supermarket, down time during your oil change, standing in line at the bank. Hand out flyers, get on the web. PR helps a lot too! You should spend half of your time or less in the restaurant overseeing the operations. The rest of your time should be spent on getting people into your restaurant.
Give it time Every business takes time to create. Even names like Wal-Mart, IBM and Krispy Kreme took time to get going (did you know Krispy Kreme opened in 1937? And you started of hearing of them when?) Be patient, and make sure you have enough equity to keep you going for at least 2-3 years.
When the Cat?s Away, the Mice Will Play Even though you will be exhausted working the marketing/business portion of your restaurant, you must still spend a lot of your time inside you restaurant. You are the most passionate person about the restaurant. In truth, you are the only one that really cares if it is a success! Just being around embarks additional excitement in not only your help, but your customers. If you think your restaurant runs the same when you are there compared to when you are not, you are very, very wrong.

If you have learned anything from this article, I hope it?s that you can do it . . .but only if you want to work for it. Congratulations, and best of luck (read: luck = really hard work) on your successes!

Starting My Own Restaurant

When I was nearly hitting the age of 30 something inside me changed I noticed I was starting to question my worth and why am I doing this job. As a manager for a big pub chain I had enough of dealing with complaint after complaint and serving rubbish products. That is when I thought long and hard about what I wanted to do with my future.

I then came up with the idea that I wanted to run my own restaurant. This restaurant had to be started from scratch as I wanted to build it from nothing to a busy restaurant and have no wise cracks from people saying "they did not used to do it that way" or "so and so used to do it this way".

I then made a list of things that I believe make a successful restaurant, these were:

LocationBusiness Partners involvedSkills of employeesSize of premisesI knew the location had to be in a busy area which would have a good influx of summer trade but still busy during the winters quiet months. I needed a business partner who had good experience in business and could help coach me along the way and also a business partner who was a skilled chef who could provide consistency in the product.

The skills involved would be important as I had always been a restaurant manager and was looking for a replacement so I could concentrate on the back end of the business with marketing and coming up with the ideas and putting them in place to grow the business.

Believe it or not working in many pubs and restaurants I learnt from the accounts that running the property (fixed costs) were never that much different so I had to make sure the property was big enough to cash in during the summer months.

Many furniture themes are associated with a particular time in history. Federal theme furniture, in particular, is associated with the birth of the independent United States.

In 1783, the Peace Treaty of Paris was signed giving the American Colonies their independence from Great Britain. The new nation was to bring many innovations of their own to the world stage, and one was a new and distinct theme of furniture making and design that is called the Federal Theme. The Federal period is usually dated from 1780 to 1820. The theme replaced the earlier American Chippendale theme, but the connection with the mother country was not completely broken. Simply put, American Federal theme furniture did retain some of the British influence.

It was a time of elegance in the emerging nation. Ladies would be sipping tea in finely appointed drawing rooms, while the men smoked and discussed the politics of the times in spacious libraries. Fortunes were being made as well, and the newly wealthy wanted large homes furnished in elaborate theme. Federal theme furniture was just the ticket.

Dark woods were extremely popular at the time. In Europe, mahogany was the wood of choice, but the Americans were making much use of cherry wood which was every bit as beautiful. A less expensive option was walnut that was usually stained a deep red with potassium chloride. There was much use of intricate workmanship. Contrasts were a very popular theme. Often inlays of different woods were used. Sometimes the wood was scorched to produce darker and lighter areas.

In the later part of the period, as the break with Great Britain became more distinct, there was much use of Stars and Eagles as decorative motifs. These national symbols replaced the more European standards that had been used in the beginning. There was much variety within the theme. Duncan Phyfe, a well known craftsman of the era, favored the mahogany wood, and is famous for his chairs which featured concave backs and concave legs. Another designer of the time, Charles Honore Lannuier was fond of using brass and gilded ornamentation on his pieces.

The Federal Period burned with a bright flare of theme through the early years of the American experience, but soon the excitement and newness of nationhood had worn off. The new era that would lead to the American Civil War was beginning. The country was beginning its expansion that would take it into the west and to the Pacific Ocean. The Federal period and the elegant federal theme furniture it produced would take its place in the history books. The pieces that remain today are valuable antiques that speak to us of a long ago time when the United States was in its infancy, and the potential was unlimited. Perhaps it still is.

A comparison of the rate of return on investment in US manufacturing in general and in US manufacturing of furniture in particular portrays the furniture industry in a generally favorable light. Profitability is defined three different ways:

* profits before tax expressed as a rate of return on sales
* profits before tax expressed as a rate of return on shareholders' equity
* profits plus interest payments on debt expressed as a rate of return on assets

Only on the basis of the first method of calculation - profits as a share of sales - is the furniture industry?s performance below the one for manufacturing as a whole. In 2005, the furniture industry?s rate was 6.0% compared to 6.5% for manufacturing overall. But this measure of return on investment is insufficient as it does not take into account the required size of the investment.

When profits are expressed as a return on shareholder?s equity, furniture achieves a rate of 20.7% compared to 14.6% for manufacturing. However, this measure is also lacking. It includes the equity, but not the debt portion of the investment producing the return.

In our view a more reliable measure expresses net profits plus interest expenses as a rate of return on total investments. This rate is computed as follows:

ROI = ((Net Profit Before Tax + Interest Expenses) / Assets) X 100

This measure gauges companies' capacity to generate both profit and interest payments on borrowed funds. It is therefore not influenced by the chosen capital source (e.g., equity or debt capital).

We estimate furniture? rate of return based on this definition at 9.5% in 2005 compared to 5.9% for overall manufacturing. Again, furniture producers produced a stronger rate of return compared to manufacturers as a whole.

The rates of return prevailing in furniture and throughout the manufacturing sector also compare favorably with the rates of return prevailing on typical financial instruments (Commercial Papers or Government Bonds).

In spite of the still healthy financial state of the American furniture industry, the trend points toward a deterioration. The rate of return for furniture producers has been rising until 1999 but dropped in the years thereafter with the exception of a short reprieve in 2002. In 2005, before tax profits as a return on shareholder?s equity for furniture producers reached 20.7%, compared to a peak of 31.9% in 1999. Nevertheless, the rate of return for furniture has been above the one for manufacturing overall in recent years.

It is interesting to note that the rate of return within the furniture and fixtures industry ? measured as profit before taxes as a percent of shareholders' equity ? was marginally lower for small furniture companies than for large companies in 2005.

America's food abundance continues to be one of the wonders of the world. Coupled with this abundance is the incredible variety of food products that are available to us in our supermarkets and in our restaurants.

When I think back to my childhood (not that long ago, I swear!), I'm struck by the memory of the limited dining-out opportunities we had then compared to now. I grew up in a medium-sized city. There were several restaurants and a couple of cafeterias, but their menus were depressingly similar to one another.

Today, that same city, as with most cities and even small towns everywhere you go in the U.S., offers just about every kind of dining experience you could want, from traditional "down home" fare to international cuisines and a bewildering variety of ethnic food. Eating out several nights a week is a common practice for many families.

The chain restaurants, in particular, have responded to America's 21st-century dining-out culture by trying to out-compete each other in every area from decor to price to menu variety. In particular, they have pulled out the stops to develop signature dishes that will turn occasional visitors into loyal (and repeat!) patrons.

Thus, we have the phenomenon of a country with nationally known and loved restaurants and their special dishes. People return to familiar eateries over and over again for those dishes, and many go so far as to find ways to get hold of the recipes in order to make them at home.

America's favorite restaurant recipes are helping to define our culture these days as much as our top professional sports teams or most popular television shows do. Indeed, eating out has come a long way in a scant few decades.

The newest craze in wall d?cor is now finding its way in to the handcrafted furniture industry by providing a simple and inexpensive way to create raised designs in styles ranging from simplistic to highly ornate. How is it being done? With specially designed stencils. Though the process can be done with common craft stencils, they typically do not create a raise high enough to even be noticeable. “Raised Plaster” stencils are cut of very thick, heavy-duty mylar that in just a few moments and with very little effort, create a raised design on finished or un-finished wood pieces using a variety of mediums. Mediums found to be very successful in this application range from common Wall Board Joint Compound (also known as “wall mud”), to products that include plaster combined with wood fiber (Brand named “Fix-it-All” or “Quick Fix” depending on the area of the country it is sold in) to any variety of wood putty. All of these products can be found in your local home or hardware stores. When using pre-mixed joint compound products or dry compound “Fix-it-All” or “Quick Fix”, the addition of white or wood glue is beneficial in creating a permanent adhesion of the product to your project piece, making it durable and rock hard. The recipe is as follows: 2 cups of joint compound combined with ? cup of wood or white glue. or 2 cups of Powdered Compound combined with ? cup of white or wood glue and enough water to create a frosting-like consistency. The application process is as simple as frosting a cake. Step 1. Simply tape the stencil to the desired area on your piece. Step 2. Using a flat edged pallet knife (with about a 2″ wide blade) spread the mixture over the top of the stencil openings then scrape smooth to remove any excess. Step 3. Carefully remove the stencil by un-taping 3 corners, leaving the last corner taped to provide stability, then pulling the stencil gently toward that last piece of tape. Any smudges can simply be removed with a wet cotton swab. A rougher texture in the design can be achieved by either not scraping the stencil smooth before removal, or by laying your pallet knife flat against the openings then creating minor “lifts” in the compound that will dry to create “peaks and valleys” in the design. Colorings can be added to any of the above products with any “pure pigment” medium such as Powdered Fabric Dye, Pure Pigment Paints, Stucco and even concrete colorings. Be aware however, that including liquid colorings may thin your medium. We recommend dry, powdered colorings for best results. When adding colors, do remember that the color you see in its “wet” form, will dry lighter so adjust colors as necessary. It is advisable to color a small amount of compound and allow it to dry to see the likely finished result. If you are planning to simply stain and varnish your piece, use wood putty products rather than compounds to create a more natural, wood toned raised design. Design possibilities are endless with the use of stencils. Many ornate styles are on the market manufactured by companies specializing in stencils. In this next article in our series on the history of chairs we're going to look at chairs of the 18th century.

With the coming of the 18th century, chairs started to become more informal and started to replace the bolt upright look of the courts and the aristocracy that was common during the time of Louis XIV. Around 1720 the commodious seat was developed in Paris, France. The new Rocco chairs were comfortably upholstered on removable frames secured by clips so that changes to the chair could be made to accommodate both winter and summer temperature and humidity conditions. These early Louis XV chairs were upholstered a la reine, with the back in a flat panel that was placed squared to the wall. This way the top rails curves complimented those of the panels behind them.

French fashion in chairs came from Paris as did everything else of the times. From the late 1720s, Louis XV French chairs were made without stretchers because they interfered with the unified flow of curved seatrails into cabriole legs. These usually ended in scrolled feet. This style was strictly enforced until the revolution when they were made mostly by a menuisier in association with the person who made the upholstery who was the huissier. These people specialized in furniture making in Paris. Specialized seats were developed and given some pretty fancy names. The most popular of these was the bergere or "shepherdess". The woods used to make most of these chairs were walnut and beech. The finishes of the chairs were made in very light tones. The days of the dark finishes were coming to an end. In some cases, the chairs were left in their natural color and were unfinished. Most of the unfinished chairs were made from walnut because it looked better unfinished than beech. In some provinces fruitwoods became very popular for chair making. These were considered variations on the traditional French models. These variations were produced mostly by Bordeaux and Liege between 1725 and 1780.

In the late 1760s the first, what are called, neoclassical chairs were manufactured in Paris. These were made even before the ascension of Louis XVI whose name is actually associated with these models. The legs of these chairs were straight tapered fluted. They were joined by a block at the seat rail. They also had architectural moldings. The leading chair makers of this style during the 1770s and 1780s were Louis Delanois, Jean-Claude Sene and Georges Jacob.

The 18th century is considered the golden age of the chair. This was especially true in France and England where there were many different ideas for chair making going around. Diderot wrote extensively about these chairs in his encyclopaedia. One of the most famous chairs of the period was the Louis Seize chair which had an oval back and a very ample seat. It also had descending arms and round-reeded legs. It was upholstered in Beauvais and woven in Boucher or Watteau-like scenes.

I'm from New York City. I've been to diners where the staff treats you like they couldn't care less. In NYC, that's called "charm."

So when my wife and I came to Sedona we were looking for a little "charm." We found it at the Sedona Airport Restaurant. Frankly, we would never have known it existed if my cousin and her husband, a pilot, hadn't decided to fly in for the weekend in their little Cessna.

They suggested we have breakfast at the Sedona Airport Restaurant and see them off on their flight back to Maryland. I'm glad we did.

As many Sedona locals know, the Sedona Airport sits perched on an aircraft carrier shaped mesa high above Sedona on Airport Road off of Hwy 89A. They say that the Sedona Airport is "America's Most Scenic Airport," and it's hard to disagree. What's even nicer about it, it's small and only supports general aviation, corporate, and military aircraft, not commercial aircraft...for now.

If you walk to the terminal and go outside, you may be lucky enough to see the Red Baron biplane taking off. At a minimum, you'll see a bunch of cool looking light aircraft parked out on the tarmac. You might even decide to take an airplane ride before your meal.

But, back to the restaurant. Okay, it's a bit of a dive. The windows on the outdoor patio area are lined with plastic, and the staff doesn't always get the order right. The Sedona Oak Creek Airport Authority is currently seeking proposals for the construction and build out of an additional terminal facility for a new restaurant and lounge.

In the meantime Bob and Debbie Calia, whose family has operated the restaurant since 1980, have signed a new lease through August 2009 and have agreed to limited remodeling such as new carpet and paint.

The food is regular diner fare, but the "charm" is in the presentation. For breakfast you can have the Pilot's Choice of corned beef hash, eggs benedict, or "Stealth Bomber Skillets." For lunch how about a "Throttle Bendin' Burger," or a nice NY strip steak for dinner? It's the kind of hardy food you expect from a down-to-earth diner. Because my cousin and her husband were flying out early, a cup of "Liquid Fuel" at breakfast hit the spot.

For a hardy meal, scenic views, and airplane watching, you can't beat the Sedona Airport Restaurant.

Average breakfast/lunch costs between $10-$15 per person, and dinner about $15-$25 per person.

What The Heck is Futon Furniture?

Futon furniture comes from the Japanese mattress that is used as a bed. The futon is a mattress that is about two or more inches thick that is placed on the floor. The mattress is filled with cotton stuffing. During the day the mattress is packed away. The American version of the futon comes from this Japanese concept, except the mattress in on a frame, which can be wood or metal. It appeared in America in the later 1960s and today is considered to be a space saving inexpensive piece of furniture.

Today, the American version of the futon comes in different shapes and sizes. The frames can be from five feet to seven feet wide. The futon is a chair or a sofa during the day and a bed when it is opened up at night. They come as either a bi-fold or a tri-fold. This refers to the number of times the mattress is folded or bent as the bed converts to a sofa. A bi-fold sleeper turns into a sofa by pulling up the back of the wood or metal frame. A tri-fold involves an extra fold and is a little more cumbersome to work with.

The futon that is considered to be a less expensive alternative to a traditional sofa or bed is a space saver. The basic metal frame futon with a mattress can be purchased for less than one hundred dollars. But not all futons are cheap. Futon frames range from the plain metal frame to the more elaborate wood design frames in almost every kind of wood and finish. They can be plain or very elaborate but they assemble with eight or ten screws. The frames can cost up to seven hundred dollars or more. There is also a great deal of variety in the futon mattress today, from the simple cotton filled Japanese version. A futon mattress can range in price from one hundred dollars to over six hundred dollars depending on the tastes of the buyer.

The nice thing about the futon is the cover, which the owner can change at any time. The buyer can chose from a colors, patterns and textures, with and without pillows. The price of the covers without pillow can range from about thirty dollars to about two hundred dollars. A high end futon can cost about fifteen hundred dollars, so even though they are space savers, they aren?t always inexpensive space savers.

Persons having difficulty in walking, those suffering from severe illness or bodily injury, and certain physically disabled persons have no other option but to use wheelchairs. The typical type of wheelchair is made up of a seat with a backrest and a footrest, along with two small front caster wheels and two larger rear wheels. Even though there are standard versions of wheelchairs, they are usually customized to suit the need of the patient or the disabled person.

The seat size, seat-to-floor height, controls, and certain other items are normally tailor-made for the individual patient to provide maximum comfort. Several optional accessories are also available, like safety belts, adjustable backrests and anti-tip bars. Mounts for crutches, oxygen cylinders, drink holders, etc. are also provided. Using the so-called omniwheel or the mecanum wheel facilitates multidirectional movement. However, it is provided only when it is absolutely necessary, since control is not as easy as the standard types of wheelchairs.

The types of wheelchairs are self-propelled, attendant-propelled, and powered. Depending on the condition of the patient or the disabled person, one of these is selected so as to give maximum comfort for the user. Attendant-propelled wheelchairs come with back handles for easy pushing. A 4 or 5-ampere rechargeable battery runs powered types. Both dry type and wet type batteries are available, though the dry type is the most preferred one. Pediatric wheelchairs are meant for the use of pregnant women. Wheelchairs for disabled sports persons are special types, incorporating features required for participation in sports.

The American with Disabilities Act of 1990 stipulates certain mandatory provisions in building construction for ease of operation by patients or disabled persons using wheelchairs. It is a statutory requirement in the United States that all new construction for public use have to be built to ADA norms. Construction of these buildings should conform to specifications of wheelchair accessible construction. Special wheelchair ramps and elevators are added in buildings so that persons with walking disabilities would not face any undue hardship. Powered doors, fixtures like sinks with lower heights, as well as large-spaced toilets with grab bars for easy maneuvering are other requirements that are generally provided for in wheelchair accessible construction of buildings.

Hospitals that have limited floors are constructed with wheelchair ramps for all the floors. During the years that my wife and I toiled at our restaurant, her indoor/outdoor cats fended for themselves from nine in the morning until after midnight. To compensate, she left a smorgasbord of cat food out for all five of the ungrateful little bastards. Our kitchen floor was a minefield of cat food bowls.

A cat had only to whimper, and the next sound would be the can opener grinding out a new feline culinary offering. Suzie only wanted shrimp. Shrimp? Sylvester only ate crunchy dry food which none of the others would touch. Rhett Butler preferred canned food but would eat another brand of crunches. Merry liked an occasional raw egg, which made cooking breakfast difficult with her under foot.

They all were offended if tiny sacks of "treats" were not regularly offered. I have no idea what controlled substance was in those treats, but it kept Kay's cuties strung-out and begging for more. That cat food came from minuscule cans with $0.50 price tags meant nothing to these furry little reprobates. Something reaches the darkest part of me when I see one of the little adorables approach a freshly opened expensive can of cat food, take one whiff, turn around and start trying to cover the food up like it had just relieved itself. But the urge to drop kick the persnickety little darling soon passes.

Television at that time was awash with cat food ads assuring all cat lovers that pussycats would break down brick walls to get to their brand. One of the most offensive of these ads showed a housewife, dressed in a cat suit, up on her roof with a bowl of food trying to entice tabby to dinner. I looked everywhere for a cat suit for Kay, my wife, for Mother's Day to no avail.

I chose Mother's Day, because Kay and I have no children, and the cats fill the void for her. My two lovely daughters satisfied my urge for progeny. So every time I file a cat complaint, Kay reminds me that cats don't require orthodontia or college educations. I've consoled myself with that thought over the course of our marriage.

Then comes the question of what do these fuzzy little despots do with what they eat and drink. I hoped since they were indoor/outdoor cats that they would have the decency to do their business outside, preferably in the neighbors' yards. But these little dears would tear down the backdoor to come in and befoul the house. It still is amazing how creative the charmers are at hiding their droppings in our house. Dropping a load in a cat box takes no talent at all. Hiding one where the odor becomes so intense that I selflessly call in a nuclear strike to save mankind, takes some doing.

Let's not forget the hair - cat hair everywhere. It starts as air pollution after their interminable licking and scratching, then settles as a fine dust over everything we own. Other times huge balls of fur roll around like tumbleweeds. These hairballs were ripped out during the nightly catfights that fell my lot to referee.

You've probably guessed that I am not some simpering, soggy cat lover who does third person baby talk to these creatures. I can build a pretty strong case for feline extinction. I also hold the hope that the person who first invited one of these animals into his abode is spending eternity neck deep in them.

From all of Kay's cats, there was, however, one sterling example of what any self-respecting cat should be. His name was Pussy. Pussy was a gelding, a condition that could produce psychological trauma in other toms whose load had been lightened. Not Pussy. He was totally self reliant and fearless.

A neighbor had a tomcat named Peter, and the two cats were bitter enemies. One night a howling cat fight broke out in our backyard that awoke both Kay and myself. She went to the window, returned to bed, and announced, "It's just Peter fighting Pussy." Kay went to sleep while I lay in bed for two hours bursting out laughing at the semantics of the occasion.

On another occasion I saw a large German Shepard mistakenly enter Pussy's front yard domain. From ambush, Pussy landed on the dog's back launching a diminutive version of a circus dog-and-pony act. Nearing the street, Pussy jumped behind the dog swiping him across his rear, and literally, as they say, "Tore him a new one."

Pussy had two other completely endearing qualities. First, he ate anything that didn't eat him first. His favorites were the leftover treats Kay brought home from our restaurant. The more haute the better the cuisine for Pussy. Second, I never saw where he did his business. I'm talking about near feline perfection here.

Pussy waited ever so stoically in the driveway each evening for our return home. He leapt into the car with the door in mid-swing, and dispensed just enough loving to insure the continuation of the ritual. He then proceeded to the business at hand - exploring Kay's ever present brown bag containing his evening treat personally delivered from our restaurant.

He definitely was a different kind of cat. I could appreciate his love for good food, and he had no bad habits. He was not hyper like most cats when they relate to humans and to their own kind. Constantly in control and always completely confident of Kay and me, his serenity and composure were ever intact.

His most endearing trait; however, was his passion for being outside where the action was. A cat that only comes around for short periods of time is something that a non-cat lover can really appreciate. Pussy and I had years of enjoyable d?tente.

When Pussy died a victim of feline leukemia, we asked the vet to save his remains. Somehow it just didn't seem right for an old friend to end in a plastic sack in a garbage can.

Kay asked me to bury him in our backyard so he would be close. I think also she felt two hours of digging in the limestone infested Texas Hill Country would keep me from continuing to wish for the early demise of her other four cats.

Befittingly, we buried Pussy in a Chateau Trottevieille St. Emilion wooden wine crate. As I lowered him into the ground, I noticed the Chateau's quality designation branded into the wooden box end - "1er Premier Grand Cru Classe."

Yeah, that was old Pussy.

Lots of times, people get choosy when they are buying a new computer, a cell phone, a refrigerator, or a flat screen TV. They try to learn everything they could about the item by reading product reviews in magazines and on the Internet; they ask friends who have tried it, and even go out to comparison shop. It?s understandable, because people want to get value for their money. But oftentimes, furniture shopping doesn?t get the same amount of research and preparation that a new appliance or electronic equipment does.

I don?t understand this. People should be giving even more effort and time into furniture shopping that they do with TVs and mobile phones and digital cameras. Quality furniture usually costs more than household appliances, after all, and they last longer too. A good dining table, for instance, will last for years with proper use and care, while your digital camera will probably become obsolete six months after you bought it. Experts in the furniture business have provided us with some helpful hints on how to shop for furniture and avoid making critical mistakes.

Bring home a sample. A sample of fabric, that is. Keep in mind that fabric patterns and colors appear differently under different lighting conditions. Again, I have to stress this major point: Measure everything before buying.

Never buy on impulse. Oh sure, it?s tough resisting the itch to go in and buy that grandfather clock at a 50% discount. But think twice before you do. Do you really need it? You may think that you just saved $200 on that purchase, but if it doesn?t match with the colors, scale, and style of your room, that?s $200 you?ve just wasted. This is a common habit of people that?s being taken advantage of by shops and stores everywhere.

Furniture is, quite obviously, an essential part of human society. Since well before the beginning of recorded history, people have been making use of at least some form of crafted furniture, and before that there can be little doubt that they made use of advantageous parts of their surroundings, such as well-shaped rocks or logs, with a similar end result. While the presence of furniture has not changed in all of this time, though, it can be certainly said that the furniture itself has very much changed over the years. In fact, essentially every aspect of furniture has changed, with the possible exception of its basic purpose.

People still sit on chairs and set thing on tables, so change can only go so far. However, one of the most interesting aspects to look at chance through over time are the materials used in the creation of the furniture. Some materials, such as stone, have largely disappeared, replaced by new things such as plastics. And other materials have remained. Take as an example the wicker garden furniture that many people have in their gardens. Believe it or not, that wicker garden furniture is the modern incarnation of an ancient legacy of furniture construction.

The processes that are used in the making of that wicker garden furniture are nothing new. They have been used, in some variation or another, since the days of the ancient Egyptians, and perhaps even farther back. Yes, wicker has its roots in the cultures of days long gone, where people had to make their furniture out of whatever they had on hand. While peoples such as the ancient Egyptians might not have had an abundance of all building materials, but there is one thing that they had a virtually endless supply of: reeds.

The Nile River, you see, had banks that were lined with reeds by the thousands. Of course, with so many of these reeds around, it was only natural that the ancient Egyptians would find a constructive use for them, and that they did by weaving the reeds together into wicker baskets and furniture which were used for centuries in the ancient Egyptian empire.

However, the wicker garden furniture you know and love had a long ways yet to go before reaching its present day form. As time went on, the practice of weaving reeds into wicker furniture and various wicker containers began to spread. At the time, Egypt was the trade capital of the Mediterranean area, and when money changes hands, culture often does as well.

And so it was that the process of making wicker objects spread throughout the world, showing up very prominently in medieval European cultures, as well as many other places. People began using materials other than the reeds that were used in Egypt, such as willow rods, and other flexible woods that would not break when woven (such as bamboo.) Eventually as technology allowed, people even began using synthetic materials. And that brings the history of your wicker garden furniture to the present, although chances are, there are many years of wicker history yet to be written.

Part of the fun of having a home theatre, is having a separate room for it. You don't have to stop with a leather sofa, or a few recliners. Find posters of your favorite movies, or often times video stores will have cardboard cut outs that they eventually just throw away. You can make your home theatre look like a normal place to watch a movie, or it can look like half the movies made in the 1970s came to life around your surround sound speakers. The room can be a place to watch the game, or it can have green carpet, and football field wall paper. The possibilities really are virtually endless, limited only by your imagination and a reasonable budget.

Aside from the ambiance and furniture, don't forget that you need furniture to hold your home theatre. Obviously the entertainment center has to be the center attention of the room. What kind of TV do you have? Is it an HD/TV, a Plasma? Do you have your own fine wooden cabinet for the entertainment center already picked out? What does the wood look like? If you have a TV that hangs on the wall, well how do you accessorize that? Where do you put the speakers? Where do you put the DVD player? All of these questions are considerations you need to keep in mind, and the selection of furniture is critical to all these elements.

There are a lot of different options as far as what kind of furniture you need and/or want. Accessories for this area could include audio visual cabinets, video cabinets, TV cabinets, stereo cabinets, multimedia storage cabinets, or entertainment cabinets. There are cabinets of every shape, color, make, and design that can accommodate almost any need or desire you have for the room.

Beyond the necessities, there are even the fun little things people don't expect. Popcorn machines are cheaper than they used to be, and for the bachelor with the great home theatre, why not build a bar right in the back of the room? It's your home theatre, why not get the home theatre furniture and other miscellanea that gives it your personality?

No one ever made a good impression by following everyone else, so find the home theatre furniture and accessories that will make that home theatre distinctly yours. After all, you're the one spending the money, you're the one putting in a home theatre, shouldn't it be something you can truly enjoy?

Arts and crafts, for starters, are things that are generally made by ones own hands, or as we call them today, hand made. This was a very big thing, starting in the 19th century, that things of quality had to be made by hand. In spite of the industrial revolution where items were now made mostly by machine, the chairs that truly defined the period were actually made by hand.

This movement was said to be started by William Morris and Edwin Lutyens. William Morris lived from 1834 to 1896. He was one of the principal founders of the British Arts and Crafts movement. In 1861 he founded Morris, Marshall and Faulkner. This company, which eventually became Morris and Company, recreated some of the medieval tapestry made for chairs of that period.
